Dr. Spearman has been an invited speaker in the US and abroad on topics of child maltreatment, coercive control, and intimate partner violence. She has given lectures at academic institutions including Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, University College of London (UK), Harvard University, Georgetown University School of Medicine, Arizona State University, and the University of Pennsylvania.
She has also been an invited lecturer to practice-based audiences including New South Wales (Australia) Children’s Court, Oklahoma Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, Maine Prosecutor’s Association, South Carolina Coalition on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Utah Domestic Violence Coalition, and the Supreme Court of Ohio.

Dr. Spearman is a committed mentor, passionate about training the next generation of practitioners and scholars to address child maltreatment and domestic violence.

Donya Hafezi Nia
PhD Student and Graduate Research AssistantDonya Hafezi Nia is a Research Assistant in the Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing at Pennsylvania State University. She completed her master's degree in Psychiatric Nursing in 2024. Before joining Penn State as a PhD student, she worked as a pediatric nurse and clinical instructor in Iran. Donya was also involved in developing a startup game application using augmented reality (AR) to simulate pregnancy experiences, with the aim of supporting mothers and promoting healthier communities. Her current research explores innovative health approaches to enhance quality of life for vulnerable populations.
